Sacred writ

If you have a holy book that you cherish, it is almost certainly connected to some religion or another. It’s very important that a holy book have sound and adequate morals that it conveys. It’s very important to pay attention to the valid moral elements of the holy writ, and not to take its message too much out of context.

In the case of the Bible, for instance, it’s best to keep in mind its unique context in history, also to consider how modern politics have shifted in ways that demand further interpretation of the spirit of the work, and to stay away from falling into the quagmire of fundamentalism. Fundamentalism is an aggressive interpretation of scripture and/or religion that takes excerpts out of context and/or has a tendency to focus on the wrong points. Looked at in-depth, fundamentalism often becomes indistinguishable from superstition, and at that point, it usually carries no philosophy whatsoever. Superstition beggars belief.

Another way that fundamentalism can creep in is when something entirely out of context is selected from a sacred writ and applied to the reader’s life or the contemporary world without a clear connection to the moral message of the scripture. Again, to use the Bible as an example, it is particularly rewarding to read entire chapters in order to complete one book at a time rather than read random excerpts, and to pay close attention to the spirit of the work and its moral message in context (though this would be less applicable in the case of Psalms, for instance). Many people actually use the Bible for divination (instead of using the tarot, for instance) by flipping through it randomly and applying whatever text their eyes land on to their current situation or whatever question they’re focusing on. This is not equivalent to Bible study, and tends not to convey the same things a complete book of the Bible communicates.

Certain kinds of fundamentalists have promoted the idea that Earth is about 6,000 years old, and others have promoted the idea that we can use ancient imagery talking about time and its vagaries to conclude we have to wait hundreds of thousands of years to reach the Satya Yuga. Both theories can be disheartening. In truth, humans in general have never been as good at calendars as we are now, and old scriptures are at their best when we interpret them responsibly and deftly.

Good and evil

There was a political doctrine in the 20th Century (1900s) that advocated and preserved evil in the world for the simple reason that eventually there would need to be an Apocalypse of sorts, for a short period of time, after which everything would get better. People were told in prophecies all over the world to expect that coming formula.

The doctrine could even be found in mainstream political parties in some countries.

Sometimes things fall apart and putting them back together in conscientious, inspired, and well-intentioned ways is the best humans can do for one another and themselves. Sometimes it creates necessary innovation, or just convinces us that best practices are best. That can be one of the main mechanisms of things getting better.

But promoting evil sounds circular and wrong-headed, and it is wrong. It’s a clear example of folly, and not the minor sort of folly. That’s the attitude that’s encouraged people in modern times to opine that good and evil should be or must be balanced in equal measure, seemingly on the principle that balance itself is a good or necessary thing. That is cribbed directly from fiction, one assumes. In reality, civilization routinely rejects evil, enough so that the average person can breathe and relax. The real and correct balance between good and evil is choosing and promoting the good while constantly beating back any evil and keeping the ravages of evil away from humanity and our sphere of influence.

For most of human history, people acknowledged that any evil allowed to run rampant was a state of imbalance.

The Apocalypse was almost certainly going to happen at some point (or something that felt sufficiently apocalyptic, although it wasn’t necessarily going to look like it does in the movies, and right now it looks like this, and should definitely get no worse), and technically speaking, the transition between a decaying modern world and a futuristic one could’ve gone smoothly. But humans and change, ya know?

We’re on the precipice of the futuristic world, and it is going to be one of the most inspiring times in human history if we can pull off preserving what’s good about our systems and infrastructures and building upon them in ways that will start to seem quite natural soon. Preserving human rights is fundamental on all sides. Systems and the people in them must shore up their ethics as soon as possible, or the Apocalypse will not necessarily be just a temporary hiccup, but something even worse, which would be extremely tragic.

Leisure city

I’m back to playing The Sims, after a years-long hiatus during which I experienced many things that I’ll have a cry over yet again shortly. My play style is significantly different now that I’m a shaman.

Current Sim roster:
Andre: Male. Likes to rant in the park for fun. Yes, he practices speeches in the mirror. Dylan and Tom seem to like to listen to Andre’s rants. Their sprites gravitate toward his soapbox when it’s ranting time, if they’re in the park too. The rest of the Sims hang back a little, but assure me that they enjoy Andre’s rant stylings just fine. Sea usually reminds me that he can hear Andre from anywhere in the park. Andre was the first Sim to get the best shower, but now Agrippa has that particular one.
Narelle: Female. She is the only Sim who wanted to do the Survivor-inspired island game show challenge. She’s a little blunt, but it’s refreshing (all my Sims seem to have good personalities). Has the biggest bathroom, I think. Tom and Twyla’s is also quite large.
Tom: Male. A straight forward, driven guy. Got a crush on Twyla right away, and things progressed very quickly. Shortly after their Sim wedding, Tom let me know that it was definitely not okay if anyone had a bigger house than them, and so we moved them to a different house two doors down. They’re currently happy together and have a mirror triptych.
Twyla: Female. Married to Tom. Twyla is sweetly funny, and seems to be the Sim most likely to stay chill in all the village. She has orange hair. She DJs at the club sometimes. She wants a pet once I unlock them. Sea had a crush on her at first, but she was into Tom. I’m a channel (including of fictional characters at times), and Sims seem very clear on their preferences when I ask them. The first time Tom told Twyla he loved her, Twyla responded: “That is the best.”
Sea: Male. Slightly cranky, yet still somehow maintains a consistent good humor. Likes to bake. Currently dating Andre. They like each other well enough, but really they got together because Sims have to be in a relationship to make Woohoo. They say they’re not sure if they want to move in together. They love the good showers.
Dylan: Female. Dylan had the biggest house until Tom and Twyla built a slightly bigger one. She has pink hair, and had a crush on Andre about thirteen seconds before he started dating Sea, and now she likes Gray. She’s a little wry.
Gray: Male. Gray is short for Grayson, but he likes Gray. Bright primary red hair. The only Sim who wanted to be a Sims wizard, Gray has relentlessly pursued every Sims magic challenge, and recently saved the town from mummies. Dylan, whom he is not currently dating and who swears to me that she is in love with him, went around the neighborhood during his quest telling everyone about his heroics.
Agrippa: Male. Agrippa’s new to town today, and he’s going to want a dog. Requested cozy wood paneling installed in Andre’s old living room.

Are we living in a simulation?

The hills are alive

“God is dead” is a quote from Nietzsche. I’d think about it this way: He wrote it for a creative writing project, and as context for that creative writing project, he was grappling with sadness and anger at that time. I believe that Nietzsche would say that God was important to him during key points of his life. He was afraid that humans would get evil.

It has never been appropriate for people to misinterpret and/or manipulate a philosopher’s words and concepts, especially in that philosopher’s absence. This has happened a lot with Nietzsche, to disturbing effect.

The concept of nihilism is not exactly a philosophy, but an ongoing conversation with despair. Despair actually became stylish in the 1990s, mellowed to a poignant patina of irony by the 2010s, and has been allowed to mutate horribly in the 2020s.

The shadow

The psychic shadow is the part of a person that doesn’t grow the normal way. It grows alongside us to show us, through our fantasies or play or (to a certain extent) clues found within our personal crises, what not to do.

The shadow is not a cohesive concept along the lines of a thought form. It is the movement of certain themes through our lives, and some of our more primitive personal reactions to them.

Shadow work describes an ethical spiritual activity through which we can sublimate our shadow by expressing its themes in harmless ways. Shadow work does not involve passive aggression nor violence nor other people directly, ever. It is not magic of any kind. It is done alone, and with intent to learn and grow.

Psychic surge

Many people and animals are much more psychic than they were in early 2019. You may have noticed this in yourself, in a pet, or in some other way. It’s a sign of the times, you might say.

Some of these psychic experiences are in fact sublime in some way, while others could be best described as psychic intrusions, which are a potentially dangerous nuisance.

Psychic experiences do not necessarily correspond with spiritual development. They do not even necessarily mean that someone has developed wisdom, and do not in and of themselves qualify someone to be a psychic medium, spiritual advisor, etc. Some psychic experiences (particularly since 2020) have been deceptive illusions, sometimes very malicious in nature. Spiritual development can result in powers, yes, but some psychic flashes, spiritual experiences, and paranormal-related distress and conflict are not linked to any spiritual powers (which in some religious traditions are sometimes referred to as spiritual gifts, charisms, siddhis, etc., and are reserved for individuals who have communed spiritually, attained virtue, and overcome ego to certain specific extents). These more secular psychic experiences, which are proliferating now, are rather the result of a person’s sensitivities picking up on something that is not totally mundane, sometimes including extraordinary expressions of negativity. It is even possible to have a psychic experience of witnessing divine intellect or to experience a dream that carries a message without it indicating any particular degree of spiritual development. Sometimes the supernatural world has something to tell a person, but is not necessarily endorsing them.

It is important that these experiences not just be confusing. Try to find the illuminated truth within the matter, if possible. It is important to never abuse others psychically nor otherwise. It is important to keep an idea of right and wrong even if you are experiencing something paranormal. Some psychic experiences are just illusions, and if something tells you to do something wrong, it is best to assume it is an illusion. It is crucially important to use one’s best judgment these days, and to resist doing wrong and/or embracing wrong.

Be good. Do right. Every time is the right time to do the right thing.
