Ares and the Greek pantheon

It’s not understood how much the Greek pantheon revolved around Ares. Ares was a real person who was instrumental to the development of what we sometimes like to call Western Civilization, which is based on a code of standards of behavior that Ares liked and thought were good for a culture’s longevity and enjoyment of life and being human, things like that. He’s connected with Thrace because he lived there and wanted everyone to leave him alone for a while. A lot of the other gods were like alter egos that Ares had:

Zeus – Ares as a father figure who didn’t mind punishing people (well, none of them really minded punishing people)
Hades – Ares as an arbiter of justice after death
Hermes – Ares during a period where he was embracing a childlike aspect
Athena – Ares coming into his looks
Apollo – Ares perfected, which he was pretty sure would someday happen

The modern mind is very inclined to ask: But why Ares? The answer is, it already happened that way. It was that way from the beginning.
