The Monomyth

The hero’s journey, or monomyth, is an idea extensively detailed and explored in author Joseph Campbell’s work, and notably his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The hero’s journey is a narrative pattern informed by a syncretic analysis of numerous myths and folk tales from all over the world. It is a foundational layer of story that generically explores how a person could become a hero.

“Hero” is an archetype. Pioneering psychiatrist Carl Jung talked a lot about archetypes, which are somewhat mysterious in nature, but they are essentially, like the hero’s journey, something like mythic templates. Unlike the hero’s journey, which is a template for a story, archetypes are usually templates for characters. But not all characters are archetypes, which have a particular kind of power that’s hard to come by. Real and fictional heroes actually both have something of this in their nature, being larger than life because of rare and particular achievements, as well being of very good character.

Deconstructing a hero within fiction too much leaves you with something less inspiring, and you usually lose the archetypal nature of the character. You’ll just have a protagonist, then, or possibly even less. They still might be referred to as the hero of the story, but they are usually not an archetypal hero.

I like archetypes a lot as a subject, in part because the more alchemy I’ve practiced, the more a doorway into their arcane mysteries has opened up to me. When I was in eleventh grade, I remember asking my English teacher if there was a list of all the archetypes I could find somewhere. He said there wasn’t one that he knew of, which was the right answer. An exhaustive list is actually probably not available, but nor are archetypes up to the discretion of the writer or audience. They are more objective than that. There’s something about them that’s like those mineral compounds that can be polished into gems. Some may still be unknown, but there are quite a few we know of, and their luster is predictable if they are pure enough.

So what happens to a hero? Campbell’s proposed monomyth contains seventeen steps, which I’ll add concise original descriptions of, according to how I’ve come to understand them after exactly the amount of alchemical work I’ve done plus the sheer amount of suffering I’ve gone through at the time I’m writing this.

The Call to Adventure
The hero is more or less a normal person at this stage, but there’s something about them, or there’s something about the world they’re in, that has the potential to explode into an incandescent adventure. Human condition, I guess you could say.
Refusal of the Call
But the hero would prefer to live some version of the life they can see all around them, thank you very much.
Supernatural Aid
Not so fast, says something genuinely abnormal. To the hero, it is possible that this stage feels very far from what they would recognize as “aid”. Maybe it feels worthwhile, and maybe it doesn’t. It can be a mentor with a certain spiritual connection, or a mysterious happening, or a mystical experience.
The Crossing of the First Threshold
The hero can’t stay where they are, doing what they probably thought they wanted to do when they were refusing the call. They have to get moving.
Belly of the Whale
The bad news is, that this endeavor isn’t going to be quite as easy as the hero probably deserves. A problem arises, and the hero faces it, more or less alone. This moment probably proves something about the hero: maybe that they’re a good person (which heroes have to be), or that they have the right idea (which is helpful for a hero), or that they have skills or potential or fortitude (which heroes have to have).
The Road of Trials
The hero has to keep moving, and alas, the way is arduous. Difficulties arise along the way, defining the adventure as a quest, as opposed to a mere travel log.
The Meeting with the Goddess
This one is rather confusing when you’re doing literary analysis, as most stories do not feature a meeting with any actual goddesses. This is a reference to finding something special. Perhaps it’s adapted from the theological theory that the manifest universe is the domain of the Goddess in a particular way. At this point, the manifest universe somehow seems to have a pinnacle to show the hero. It can be an item, a goddess, a splendid city, or something else, but it is worth seeing.
Temptation
Here is where the question “Why continue?” or “Why go anywhere else?” comes up in one way or another, but it is not wholesome in contrast to the hero’s actual destiny. Once the hero comes to realize this, the hero rejects the temptation to halt the quest, and continues on.
Atonement/Abyss
Something happens that brings up a new idea: someone or something might have a quarrel with the hero based on the hero’s history, nature, or conduct, or based on the nature of reality itself. Suddenly there is a problem that cannot be solved so directly as the prior challenges. The hero must confront something about themselves here, and understand who they the hero are, what they’ve done, and how they feel about the world, all well enough to navigate this stage.
Apotheosis
Oh good, the hero did a good job navigating the last stage! Now they’re the bigger person, compared with before. They are something larger than life, and their instincts will from now on be to do the very right thing.
The Ultimate Boon
Now the hero reaches a key objective, getting something they needed or at least wanted very much and are not entirely undeserving of.
Refusal of the Return
There is likely something on the journey or at the end of the journey that the hero doesn’t want to leave. But one thing the hero has learned is that not everything can stay exactly the same all the time. What we see here is actually usually much more like reluctance than refusal, though stories may vary. A hero at this stage can move forward if they know they’re supposed to. They just can.
The Magic Flight
The hero starts on the journey home, usually with the ultimate boon or something gained from it.
Rescue
The hero deserves help, and sometimes they really need it by now. It’s usually help from someone or something powerful, and this is where it comes in.
The Crossing of the Return Threshold
At this point the hero often returns in some way to what one could call the real world, which is at least semi-distinct from the more single-minded existence of the quest. This is where that shift occurs. The hero may be reunited with previous companions, locales, or pursuits.
Master of the Two Worlds
This is where the hero integrates back into that real world, but this time as a person who has developed new abilities, new understanding, and the right instincts. The world is lucky to have a person such as this. They have the education and life experience that faithfully following the quest offered them, and they are better for it.
Freedom to Live
Life can be good, and the hero is ready– and well-equipped– to live it. Sometimes the status quo even changes because what came before was so pivotal in the world, and part of the hero’s great reward is this: it’s a better status quo.

For real life heroes, hewing to the best in themselves can take them into and through some of these steps rather naturally, sometimes in this order, sometimes in a different order.

The Riddle of the Emerald Tablet

The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus is a mysterious text renowned in the Middle Ages and beyond as part of the Hermetica, a mostly-lost alchemical literary tradition. The Emerald Tablet itself is an ancient mystical riddle. Below is the solved version, reconstructed from many centuries ago and published for the first time (you can easily find the traditional unsolved version of the Emerald Tablet in many translations by searching online).

The Solution to the Riddle of the Emerald Tablet:

This is assuredly true:
Humans above the ground can learn from the rocks and stones below the ground,
Just as rocks and stones below the ground have been listening to the humans above the ground.
And herein we will tell you of a miracle that they are all a part of.
Here is what the emeralds have learned, and what the emeralds say:
The world is one thing altogether. It is true!
Thus all that happens in the world is happening to the world, and the world itself is conscious of it.
The Sun is the father of this world.
The Moon is known as its mother.
The wind is more responsible for the world and its consciousness than you may know.
It is the planet Earth that sustains it, this one thing that is the world altogether.
God/the good thing did bid this world exist, and if God/the good thing is fully manifest in the world, the one thing will be perfected at last.
Understand spirit and nurture it with goodness, rejecting vulgar and materialist viewpoints.
Become wise and careful.
Integrate your flights of spirit well; do not forget this lesson.
It is important and brings glory to your intellect to see the world this way.
This lesson will be repeated a thousand years from now if you share it well.
The force of this world’s unity is the strongest force known within it. This unity snakes through all things subtle and all things solid on Earth, and cannot be subdued.
By this unified world your human world was created.
This unified world gives birth to many adaptations.
This was written by Hermes Trismegistus, who studies God, humans, and Earth: all three.
This Earth and its grand elaborations reveal themselves to be the great work of the Sun, a work that is both complete and incomplete, for it is fully formed and ever changing.

In understanding the profundity of this mystical riddle, it may be helpful to keep in mind that humans could not have technically confirmed that Earth is in fact a planet until we were able to photograph it from space or orbit. I specify the reference to planet Earth in the solution, but the wording in English translations of the riddle is more vague, and in fact there’s reason to believe that most if not all people for most of history had vague and varying ideas about what Earth is. Perhaps less so emeralds.

The title of the Emerald Tablet is in fact a clue to its riddle’s provenance and solution: the message originally comes from mineral intelligence channeled through a person who gave himself the pen name Hermes Trismegistus, and refers to a mystical unified theory about our green planet, Earth.

Signs of spiritual development in process

The following are some signs that someone is approaching or experiencing a period of steep spiritual development:

Anxiety: Anxiety is a kind of “spinning your wheels” fear, as opposed to nerves or nervousness, which tend to feel more specifically grounded and situational, or real fear, which is in reaction to a significant threat. An uptick in day-to-day anxiety can sometimes indicate that someone is approaching an impending personal breakthrough, especially if it is social anxiety that does not accompany any personal knowledge of having committed wrongdoing. Sometimes the anxious fear is literally that we’ll be judged for growing, whether that fear is conscious or not. If we don’t push through in good faith and work toward the impending breakthrough, the anxiety issues tend to continue, even if we get off track from our spiritual development path.

A drive to search for meaning: The search for meaning is a natural drive in humans, and at certain points in our lives it is at the forefront. When we look for meaning, it is a spiritual process, and it is usually successful to a certain degree, if our intentions and conduct remain good.

Hardship: Hardship itself can spark accelerated spiritual development. If someone is going through extraordinary hardship, they may also be in the process of attaining a certain type of maturity that is very desirable. If they do not de-emphasize sincere spirituality during that time, they are quite possibly becoming wiser, whatever else is going on at that time. On the subject of intentionally initiating a period of hardship for this purpose, it is usually most appropriate and effective to work respectfully and alone in nature, as opposed to voluntarily subjecting oneself to reckless situations, toxic individuals or groups, or terrible ideas, for instance: things that do not promote clarity. The former is sometimes referred to as austerities. The latter is foolish.

Certain content in media may start to seem more toxic than it used to: Watching media is an experience that holds up a mirror to the viewer, and you can notice shifts in yourself as you watch or rewatch things. For instance, characters lying in a movie or show might start to stand out more, and might bother you more than it used to. This is sometimes a sign that you are integrating or have recently integrated the fourth dimension.

A new or renewed interest in spirituality or comparative religion: As a person develops spiritually, they may want to explore spiritual themes, and will usually do so in a way that broadens rather than narrows their respect for humanity’s spiritual traditions.

Withdrawing from toxic relationships and/or toxic activities: The more a person grows into their spirituality, it can sometimes become harder to accept toxic behaviors as normal. They tend to stand out more, and do not seem compatible with favorable growth as a person. Toxic patterns can seem less dramatic and more repetitive. Be careful of how toxic personalities sometimes come on very strong and pursue very toxic patterns when they sense that someone else has something exciting going on, like a spiritual breakthrough or a special purpose they’re pursuing in their life. Also, watch for how you feel while you’re spending time with someone, but also how you feel afterward. If there is a quick and confusing crash in your mood or well-being after you leave someone’s presence, that’s sometimes a bad sign, especially if it happens every time.

An interest in becoming a better person: When a person is growing in their best direction, they naturally feel a pull toward becoming the best version of themselves, a person who is increasingly trustworthy and upright. This is an exciting upward spiral to experience, and can generate a lot of euphoria.

Different sense of humor: Not everything is funny forever. The more a person grows, for instance, the less likely they are to experience a sense of comedy in what’s sometimes known as schadenfreude (enjoying someone’s else’s misfortune).

A drive to spend time in nature: As a person develops spiritually, they often start to value nature and time in nature more.

Spontaneous spiritual experience: Strange and sometimes sublime things can happen when you’re growing. Spiritual development and spiritual ascension can carry some very unique experiences. There can be moments of rapture, physical phenomena, psychic phenomena, flashes of certainty, and more. Discernment in key in understanding these, as it can be counterproductive to assume that all unexplained experiences are of a spiritual nature, obviously.

Crimps in the skull above the ears: Certain people approaching a certain point in their spiritual ascension may develop crimps or vertical ridges in the skull above their ears.

Changes in skull shape: As the result of spiritual ascension, a person’s cerebellum can become reduced in size, resulting in a flatter profile near the base of the skull. This and other skull changes are some of the physical changes that can occur with spiritual ascension. This and the skull crimping happened to me in the late 2010s, around when I was integrating the fifth dimension.

It is good for a person to develop spiritually, especially if that person’s philosophies are keeping pace. A healthy spiritual outlook tends to be the kind of outlook that is beneficial and sustainable through life’s difficulties and lavish successes. And there is no substitute for personal development, which often goes hand-in-hand with spiritual development, and really should.

On Golden Ages

Historically speaking, a Golden Age is a period of time where a society has a lot of extremely rapid and surprising growth and expansion happen at civilization levels, technological levels, cultural levels, etc. There’s good leadership, there’s good art, and there’s often timeless architecture. Everything kind of clicks, and people end up having a very stable and prosperous time, and everyone ends up remembering them as a successful society and admitting that there was quite an enormous amount to admire.

It is very desirable to get caught up in one of these Golden Ages, has been the general consensus.

Golden Ages have an alchemical element, and they expand that way. They start with good and inspired leadership. If we can get the world’s leaders righteous and happy and breathing alchemy, theoretically the world’s existing societies can start having new Golden Ages emerge.

A 21st Century Golden Age is highly possible for us. Theoretically, it’s waiting there on the other side of the Apocalypse, as long as we can exit the Apocalypse properly.

Longevity in the Satya

Legends about the Satya Yuga say that people then live longer lifetimes than we do now. They’re virtuous and beautiful. You can read about this elsewhere on the internet. They say also that the Kali Yuga is too sinful, and that in it we are living in comparative misery.

Corruption and villainy are very rare and detested in the Satya Yuga. Polyamory and other nonmonogamy should be much easier. People are more gracious, and dharma pervades their relationships.

The Satya Yuga is due on everyone’s timeline, whether they are Hindu or not. Some people call the Satya Yuga the Age of Aquarius (although that’s just the first part of it, I think), the Golden Era, or Paradise.

We could be inside the Satya timeframe or close in ten years, theoretically. We could be those people. Ascension would provide transition between Kali Yuga biology and Satya Yuga biology and culture.

Some individuals may resurrect and end up living multiple centuries. Living to 150 may start becoming common for everyone else.

Manifesting deities

An avatar is a person who regularly manifests a very specific kind of divinity or relationship to a deity. They embody the energy of a deity or deities intrinsically, or serve particularly as their champion, and have a special connection with the divine or a divine mission.

This is so personal, but I am being candid because of recruitment reasons, and to a certain extent because the world is falling apart and this is no time to be shy. I have developed into what might be described as a real avatar; I didn’t even slightly know it until 2014. It didn’t sink in as something I understood until 2020, when I was much further along the path. It’s a long story; I’m guessing they all are. Real avatars are part of Earth’s Ascension plan, a plan that involves many people practicing spiritual alchemy, conscious ascension work, honest personal development, devotion, and more. Individuals can potentially emerge as avatars in the coming decades (and possibly even centuries) as part of their spiritual ascension process. They’ll hopefully help humanity reach the Satya Yuga (also known as the Krita Yuga) and an era of sufficient virtue and opulence.

I also believe in God and serve the universal God, who is good. One religious model for working with polytheistic deities while serving a universal God is present in many Ancient Egyptian religions, another is Yoruba. I use a syncretic model.

After years of training to be a shaman, I developed the spiritual anointing and the skill set to spontaneously manifest gods (including goddesses) via something like advanced, full body channeling. This type of channeling can be sustained clearly through even full beta and gamma state consciousness, in addition to the kind of channeling done in more trance-like states such as alpha and theta. This has been an extremely rewarding and humbling practice, and I love doing it. These are each important parts of me. Different deities manifest with different accents (which I didn’t learn, but downloaded spontaneously) and can use my voice in different ways. Some of them have very distinct astral and/or etheric images that can sometimes be seen with second sight while I’m manifesting them, but otherwise they just look like me.

More than one can manifest at once and have a conversation amongst themselves through my body. They also like to talk to people who visit me astrally sometimes. They don’t speak with me directly as much because I’m them and we share a mind as well as thoughts. Collectively, I call them the godwheel. If one experiences channeling multiple such energies having a conversation, perhaps it’s natural to think of it as being like a wheel somehow. It is for me, anyway.

Some of the polytheistic gods are interested in teaming up with other humans, extraordinary individuals who can become avatars or champions, and may have the opportunity to develop similar psychic structures to my godwheel. This hasn’t happened yet, but several gods have touched base with me on the matter. I know the names of some of the individuals they have in mind. One interesting thing to note is that many deities seem interested in participating in “concept avatars” that feature human beings manifesting a customized roster of deities, such that a concept emerges, almost like how a fictional superhero is very specialized. All avatars and champions of deities must, of course, be good and decent, and focus on cleaving to the right path. They will not be able to manifest deities nor attract their notice in a corrupted state. Rather, they must be worthy of carrying forward the bright legacies of good mythologies and very good energies. It will be exciting to see some righteous individuals develop that way.
